Whitening
Your dentist will discuss your needs and help you choose which option for teeth whitening is most suitable for you. Teeth whitening treatment usually involves using either a professional custom-made home whitening kit.
Home teeth whitening
At Village Dental Practice we have opted to use the SDI Teeth Whitening System for our patients who wish to have the convenience of managing their teeth whitening at home.
Fast results
Cosmetic teeth whitening is a convenient process. Custom-made home teeth whitening kits mean treatment can usually be completed within only two to three weeks.
Lasting whitening
The effects of teeth whitening should last up to two years. The teeth will very gradually stain and darken again but this is a slow process and takes time to be noticeable. Custom-home whitening kits mean top-up treatments can be conveniently carried out at home to maintain your whiter teeth. The longevity of whitening varies from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth. Your dentist will discuss these issues with you before you start the treatment.

FAQ’s
Is teeth whitening safe?
Teeth whitening has been carried out safely for over 30 years, and there have been no long term side-effects or weakening of teeth reported. During teeth whitening procedures, some patients may experience mild discomfort but this is temporary and does not interfere with the ultimate goal of achieving a whiter, brighter smile. Our professional teeth whitening gels contain de-sensitising agents to minimise any discomfort which may be associated with teeth whitening treatments.
What about over-the-counter teeth whitening kits?
Home kits are cheaper but they are not custom-made or properly assessed for safety. Over-the-counter cosmetic teeth whitening kits tend to be more acidic and abrasive, so there is a chance that these products could damage your teeth and gums. Because of current European regulations, the whitening gel that is used professionally by dentists can only legally be used in over-the-counter kits in very small quantities, and these tend to be ineffective for significant colour changes. Often patients attend the practice for professional teeth whitening having been disappointed with the results of inferior shop-bought or internet whitening kits.
What about teeth whitening treatments from a beauticians and hairdressers?
In the UK (and Europe) whitening can only legally be carried out by a dentist or the prescription of a dentist. Teeth whitening by beauticians, hairdressers and other non-dentists is illegal. These regulations are to protect the public. They make sure that anyone carrying out whitening is properly trained and has the right skills and knowledge to carry out the procedure without risking permanent damage to the teeth or gums. Only a dentist will be able to properly asses your suitability for whitening and assess the possible limitations or complications of the treatment.
What about teeth whitening toothpastes?
There are several whitening toothpastes on the market. Although they do not affect the natural colour of your teeth, they may be effective at removing staining. Therefore, they may improve the overall appearance of your teeth. Whitening toothpaste may also help the effect to last, once your teeth have been professionally whitened.
Can a single dark tooth be whitened?
This depends upon the cause of the dark colour, which can include a dead nerve, discoloured fillings, veneers or crowns. Your dentist will determine the cause and advise you of the correct treatment.
How can I look after my teeth once they have been whitened?
You can help to keep your teeth white by cutting down on the amount of food and drink you have that can stain teeth. Don’t forget, stopping smoking can also help prevent discolouration and staining.
